vegan on a budget

Recommendations March 4, 2012

  • Cure Constipation Now — The first book I recommend to anyone looking into their diet is called “Cure Constipation Now.” You can view the site and purchase the book (about $10) at The author, Dr Wes, in my experience so far, responds to emails within 12 – 24 hours. The basics are that if your bowels are not as they should be (eg they are loose and water or hard and difficult to poop), you are constipated! The treatment is to introduce a synthetic fiber (Citrucel (methylcellulose), Benefiber (wheat dextrin), or EZ Fiber (guar gum)) into your daily regimen, along with an osmotic laxative (NOT a stimulant laxative) like Miralax (polyethylene glycol) or Milk of Magnesia. Then after a while of receiving good bathroom habits, you can switch over to natural fiber like psyllium husk/powder and wean off the laxative. The exact details and explanations are in the book, which I highly recommend. Yes, it will make you buy powders and pills, but the therapy he prescribes is so effective, it can diminish a whole host of other digestive issues (hemorrhoids, IBS, reflux, etc). Read it!
  • Happy Herbivore — Lindsay does an absolutely wonderful job of blogging on every relevant topic imaginable. Her cookbooks are great (I use both extensively), and she recently started doing meal plans for weight loss. Highly recommend following her on FB and by email.
  • JLGoesVegan and StopChasingSkinny are blogs by JL Fields and her experience about 1 going vegan and 2 trying to be healthy and ignoring the pants size.
